Prologue

"Eden!  Eden!"  He shook him by the shoulders, eyes filling with tears as Eden's head lolled to the side.  Running his fingers along the other man's bruised and battered cheek, tears fell from Chase's eyes.  "Please...you have to wake up...please..."
This wasn't happening.  It couldn't be.  Eden wasn't dead, he wasn't holding his bloody corpse in his arms.  No.  "Eden!"  Chase's voice grew high with fear, a sudden panic filling him.  "You can hear me, right?!  Right?!"
His eyes drifted down to the man's neck, widening when he saw the large bruise encircling Eden's thin neck.  "...Eden..."
"You know...calling his name isn't going to bring him back."
Chase whirled around, pivoting on the balls of his feet as he knelt, his hair flying as he did so.  Clutching Eden to his chest, he practically snarled at the man standing in the doorway.  "...You bastard..."
          "He deserved it."
"He'd never do anything that deserved this!"
Sneering, the tall man stepped forward.  "It's your fault, Chase.  If you hadn't come and ruined everything, Eden would still be alive."

*********

Ch. 1

How long had it been since he had moved in with his older brother?  A week?  Maybe a few days longer.  It wasn't like Chase disliked his brother.  No, in fact, he practically idolized Adam.  He just seemed so perfect in everyway.  Tall, muscular, blonde hair blue eyes, handsome and an A student at the local university.  It was no wonder that their parents tended to dote on the older child.
Not that Chase was ugly, no, he was growing to be quite the looker.  Instead of straight hair, his sandy blonde hair fell in waves around his face, the strands stopping at the base of the teenager's neck.  Green eyes instead of blue, Chase's hair usually hid half his face.  He was lean instead of muscular, his frame lacking the sturdiness of his older brother's.
It was true, children turned out better with parental support.  One can only imagine how Chase was turning out since he was basically ignored by both parents.  By his current age of sixteen, he was smoking, drinking, having sex, pretty much every parent's nightmare.  So it came to be, Chase Paxton was kicked out of his home and having no where else to turn, he moved in with his twenty one year old brother, Adam.
So far...things had gone by rather uneventfully.  Chase enrolled himself in school while Adam attended college.
Walking in after a particularly trying day at school, Chase threw his book bag on the floor, kicking his shoes off.  "Fucking son of a bitch cocksuckin-"
"That's such lovely language."  Adam called out from the kitchen.  He emerged from the room, soda in his hand.  Smirking, he leaned against the wall and watched his brother wander over to the couch.  "What's up?"
          "Suspended."
"Damn it, Chase...you've only been in school for five days."
Chase scowled, stretching himself out on the couch.  "Well, this guy walked up to me asking for my vote in some retarded school election and I told him to back the fuck off...he wouldn't leave so I punched in him the face."  He yawned, holding his hand up to glance at his bruised knuckles.  "So, the little pussy told on me and I'm suspended for five days."
Rolling his eyes, Adam shoved his brother's legs off the couch and sat down in their place, taking a sip of his soda.  "You really should learn to control that temper of yours.  People are gunna start to think you're psycho."
           "Whatever..."
They were silent for a moment, nothing filling the air but the sound of the clock ticking.  It was a comfortable silence.  Chase and Adam never really talked much.  They were content just sitting, deciding that it was better for their relationship if they never discussed their little problems...that would just result in a fight.
The door opened and in stepped a tall man with light brown curly hair, the loose curls falling around his face.  Taking off the black sunglasses he wore, he revealed dark brown eyes.  "Adam, who the hell is that?"  The man asked, walking into the apartment after closing the door.
Chase sat up, glaring up at the stranger.  "Who the hell are you?"  He retorted.
Putting a hand on his brother's shoulder, Adam leaned forward.  "Calm down, guys..."  He said, laughter in his voice.  "Dan, I told you.  My kid brother is staying with us, remember?"
          "Oh yeah..."
"Chase, this is my roommate Dante."  Adam motioned towards Dante, returning his attention to his soda again.
"Oh...What's up?"  The teenager held out his hand, not bothering to get up.
Dante mumbled something, walking past the two, basically ignoring Chase's hand as he moved down the hallway.  Opening the door, he slammed it after himself.  Within seconds, loud rock music was heard from the room.
"...What the hell?"  Chase raised an eyebrow.  "What a fucker."
"He's stoned."  Adam explained, sipping at his drink again.  "He went to stay with a few friends and yeah...he always comes back high off his ass."
          "You live with a stoner?"
"Well...he was my best friend in high school and he wasn't always a selfish dickhead."  He paused, thinking for a moment.  "And the rent is cheaper if we split it between us."
Chase was silent for a moment.  Alright.  So his brother had a roommate.  That meant there was going to be three guys living there...that wasn't that bad.  The fact that Dante seemed kind of like a jerk and he had bad taste in rock music didn't help but oh well...beggers can't be choosers.

There was someone in the apartment that really caught his attention...Eden.  Apparently there were a few things he hadn't know about his brother.  Like the fact that Adam was gay.  Yeah, he had missed that one completely.  That was...alright.  It's always a shock to find out that the person you had idolized and wanted to be like for your entire life was a homosexual.
Not that Chase was a homophobe...it was just a surprise.  Why hadn't his brother told him?  Sitting on the couch, the sixteen year old boy wondered this very thing.  A soda in hand, he stared at the TV, his mind wondering.  His brother was gay.  How had he missed that one?  Would there have been some sort of sign...?
Adam had always been the more masculine one...the stronger one...hell, he attracted more girls than Chase ever did.  Now that he really thought about it....he had never seen Adam with a single girl.  Of course, he had a few female friends but they were just friends.  That was it.
There were a few guys...they would come over all the time and stay the night.  Their parents just thought they were Adam's friends.  Nope.  Chase made a face.  Ew...his brother had been having sex in the room next to him.  That was just disturbing.
So...his perfect older brother had been leading a double life.  Hiding his sexual orientation from their parents...that was actually kind of sad.  To think that Adam would have to put up a show for people that should love them no matter what...
The door swung open and in stepped Eden, hands full has he held a few paper bags full of groceries to his chest.  He kicked the door closed and carefully moved into the kitchen, setting the bag on the counter.
Chase moved closer to the arm of the couch, resting his chin on it as he gazed into the kitchen.  Eden was beautiful.  There was no other way to put it.  He hadn't ever thought of calling another man beautiful...but that was just the perfect word for Eden.
He watched the other male move around the kitchen, noting on how gracefully he moved.  Eden's grey eyes were hidden as usual by his silken, jet hair and rectangular, black rimmed glasses.  His slender build was hidden by a large hoodie, the sleeves going past his fingertips.
Frowning, Chase noted that Eden's already full lips were a bit swollen...how had that happened?  Oh...Eden and Adam must have...
He forced himself to look away as the realization that he had been staring at his brother's boyfriend hit him.  Boyfriend.  Maybe it would have been different if Eden was a girl...but he was definitely a male...otherwise, Adam wouldn't be interested in him.
"What the hell is wrong with me...?"  He wondered, taking a swig of his soda and coughing loudly as the carbonation burned his throat.  Okay, that had been a bad idea.  Really stupid.  Chase sighed, pounding on his chest before he sneaked a peek back into the kitchen.
The bags were gone...groceries put away...and no Eden to be seen.  "How the hell does he move like that...?"  He asked himself out loud, standing up.
          "He's part cat."
Jumping, he whirled around.  "Adam, you shit, don't sneak up on me like that."  Chase snapped, eyes narrowing slightly in annoyance.
Adam laughed, walking into the kitchen.  "What are you talking about?  You're the one who was spacing out..."  Reaching up, he pulled a loaf of bread off the counter and opened it.  "Wanna sandwich?"
          "Yeah.  That'd be good..."
          "Peanut butter and jelly."
          "Kay."
Opening a cabinet, Adam pulled out a jar of jelly.  He began to open it but suddenly stopped, eyes locked on the label.  "........."
Chase sat down on the couch, yawning.  "What's the hold up?  Get me my damn sandwich, biotch..."
Adam suddenly whirled around, stalking off into his bedroom, slamming the door open.  Blinking, Chase stood up.  "Adam...?"

His eyes widened behind thick framed eyeglasses when Adam stormed in.  Fiddling with the sleeve of his oversized hoodie, Eden looked up at the blonde, careful not to make eye contact.
Adam closed the door, locking it behind himself.  He held up the jar of jelly, a look nothing short or pure fury on his face.  "Eden, what's this?"  He asked, his tone condescending.
".....Jelly........"  He responded, putting his thumb to his mouth and chewing at the already ragged nail.
"Don't mock me, I know what the fuck it is.  I mean...WHAT is this doing in our home?"  Adam's eyes narrowed.
Looking down, Eden wrapped his arms around himself.  ".........You.....told me....to get jelly...."  His voice shook as he spoke, his dark hair completely covering his eyes.
Adam stepped forward.  "I know what I told you....but you know that I only like one type of jelly.  Why the fuck did you get me this?"  His voice was growing steadily lower, that slight dangerous tone in it.
The dark haired male started to tremble.  He looked up at Adam from behind a curtain of hair, only one of his eyes visible.  ".....There was a...sale...on the kind you like and....they were all out.....so I had to get that one....I'm sorry...."
"You should be sorry!"  He roughly pushed Eden's hair out of his face, knocking the glasses right off his face.  "You know what you should have done?"
          "......No....."
"You should have walked your lazy ass to the next store and bought the right kind.  Are you really that stupid?!"
"I'm sorry, Adam....I won't do that next time..."
Adam shoved the man down onto the bed, tossing the jar of jelly onto the bed.  Straddling Eden's waist, he put a hand on either one of the other man's shoulders.  He stared straight into Eden's wide eyes and smirked.  "You're so tiny, Eden..."  He ran his hands up and down the smaller male's sides, prompting Eden to start shivering.  "Do you know what I could do to you...?"
          "Yes...."
He slapped Eden across the face, watching the red mark form for a few moments before he spoke again.  "....I could kill you in a heartbeat.  You know why?  Because you're weak and stupid...no one would miss you.  Not even your family."
Eden's eyes filled with tears and he turned his head to the side.
Adam practically snarled, roughly grabbing Eden's face and forcing the male to look at him.  "Don't you ever turn away from me..."  He hissed, squeezing with bruising force.  "You look away from me when I'm talking to you and I'll make you wish you had stayed in that fucking shelter.  Do you understand me?"
          "Yes, Adam...I'm sorry..."
"Pathetic little fuck."  Adam sat up, roughly grabbing Eden by the arm and forcing him to his feet.  He grabbed the male by the neck and threw him to the floor.  "Make a sound...and I'll beat you to death."
Eden put his hand over his mouth, muffling the sound of his sobs.
"Good....now keep quiet or it'll be worse..."  Adam kicked the other male, smirking as Eden tried his best not to cry out in pain.  "What's wrong...?  Still sore from yesterday's little lesson...?"
"Adam...Adam, please..."  Eden turned his head slightly, looking up at the taller male.  "I'm so sorry.....I'll go...to the store again....I'm sorry...."  His voice was choked, tears falling down his bruising face.
Reaching down, Adam gently touched Eden's face.  "Sorry, baby...you have to be taught a lesson otherwise you'll be stupid forever."
          "Please..."
The hand, gentle before promptly slapped the dark haired male across the face.  "What did I tell you before?!  You don't question me!  You're so fucking stupid!"  Adam scowled down at the sobbing Eden and shook his head.  "I should throw your stupid ass out on the streets where I found out."
"No!"  Eden quickly sat up, grabbing onto Adam's pant leg.  Looking up at his boyfriend with terror filled eyes, more tears fell down his cheeks.  "Please...please, don't make me go back.  I'm sorry....I'm sorry, Adam...I'll be good...."
He smirked and kicked Eden hard in the chest, watching the other male fly back and slam against the nightstand.  Eden moaned in pain, falling onto his side.  His dark hair fell over his face, slender chest heaving with the force of his sobs.
"So pathetic..."  Adam shook his head and turned away, walking towards the door.  With one hand on the door knob, he smiled brightly at his beaten lover.  "Stay in here until I tell you to, come out, I'll get the belt."
Nodding, Eden stayed on the floor.  "Yes..."
"Good boy."  The blonde walked out of his bedroom, closing the door after himself.  He walked down the hallway and smiled at his confused looking brother.  "Hey, wanna go out to eat?"
Chase frowned slightly.  "What did you do with the jar of jelly?"
Shrugging, Adam motioned towards the hallway.  "Eden bought the wrong kind of jelly...went to show him, I must have left the jar in the room.  Oh well."  He smiled again.  "Come on, let's get some pizza or something.  My treat."
Smiling, Chase nodded.  "Alright.  Stuffed crust and pepperoni?"  He asked, bending down to slip on his sneakers.
          "You know it."
          "You're the best, Adam!"
